Volunteer Center

Through the establishment of a volunteer program, the goal of the Kansas Department of Corrections is to incorporate a spirit of service to others throughout the Department and its collaborating agencies. Volunteers will be enabled through training and support to effectively provide opportunities for offenders to successfully reintegrate in to society. Volunteers will be agents supporting lasting change for those affected by crime. Together, we are tasked and honored with the vision of making our communities a safer place for all.

Why Volunteer?

You can help the Kansas Department of Corrections improve public safety in our communities.

Every year, more than 3,000 inmates are released from Kansas prisons and return to supervision in our communities. You can help the Department of Corrections help offenders who are working to become productive, taxpaying citizens and not returning to prison.

The Department of Corrections identifies the areas to target when working with high-risk or special-needs offenders. Some of the problems faced by returning offenders include:

  • 24% lack stable housing options;

  • 60% will struggle to find and keep jobs;

  • 34% are addicted to or abuse drugs and/or alcohol;

  • 23% have significant family or marital issues;

  • 52% have poor decision-making skills resulting in offenders making unwise choices in how they spend their free time or in their personal relationships.

Working together with the Department of Corrections, you will play a vital role in alleviating the problems faced by offenders and, in turn, make our communities safer places to live.
